Embracing Generosity: Helping Yourself During the Holiday Season

holiday survival Dec 01, 2023

As the holiday season unfolds, it's a time for reflection, gratitude, and above all, generosity. The festive spirit often brings with it the joy of gift-giving and the warmth of family gatherings. During this season, I'm reminded of the most generous person I've ever known - my maternal grandmother.

My grandmother's life story, penned on a typewriter and treasured in our family archives, is a testament to her resilience and generosity. Growing up during the Great Depression, she learned the value of gratitude for the things she had, a lesson that shaped her into one of the most generous people I've ever encountered.

Her life was a narrative of selfless giving. After losing her husband to cancer in 1988, my grandmother, a librarian by profession, found herself in charge of the family finances. Despite living modestly, she chose to use her resources to benefit others. Her generosity wasn't just limited to our family, where she ensured all her grandchildren received a college education and were never short of gifts. She also extended her kindness to various charities, with a special affection for the Audubon Society, and was a benefactor in her Lutheran church community.

But her generosity went beyond financial aid. She was our pillar of support, the person we could turn to in any tough situation, knowing she would do anything to help.

This holiday season, I encourage you to think about the most generous person in your life. Reflect on those who have been there for you during challenging times. It's easy to feel isolated during the holidays, especially if they're fraught with personal struggles. I've experienced this firsthand, with holidays often becoming a trigger for my husband, who endured childhood abuse. These periods brought out intense emotions, leading to arguments and withdrawal, making me realize the significance of support during such times.

Generosity isn't just about giving gifts; it's also about being there for each other. If you're facing difficulties this holiday season, remember that your friends and family want to help. They can offer support in simple yet meaningful ways - a shared movie night, a heartfelt conversation, or even just taking care of the kids for a while.

Writing my story and sharing my struggles opened my eyes to the support around me. Friends expressed their wish to have been there for me, highlighting the importance of reaching out. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to lean on your support system. And remember, if the roles were reversed, you'd be there for them.

Questions to Reflect Upon:

  1. Who has been the most generous person in your life, and how have they influenced you?
  2. What are some ways you've been supported by others in tough times, and how did it make you feel?
  3. Reflect on a time when accepting help was challenging for you. Why was it difficult, and what did you learn from the experience?
  4. In what ways can embracing and offering generosity bring more joy and fulfillment to your holiday celebrations?

So, this holiday season, let's embrace the spirit of generosity in all its forms. If you're finding the holidays challenging, tap into your support network and think creatively about what you need and how others can help.
